Book review

‘Hippos can swim’, written by Pablo Bernasconi is an adventurous and humorous story.

The author wrote a story that has important messages, such as never give up,and attempt challenges. He wants the reader to understand that everyone (or animal) is good at something. The illustrations are colourful,  creative and cute.

The story is about a hippo that doesn’t want to swim. Instead,he tries to find another activities as lot of different animals. Which activity will he succeed at? Read the book to find out.

My favourite part  of the book was watching the Hippo trying all of the different activities.

Yes, we liked the book because some parts were humorous and illustration were bright and colourful. We also liked how the hippo preserved and faced challenges bravely.

Overall I think ‘Hippo can Swim’ is for everyone to read this book because teaching not giving up, I give the book 5 and a half star.

Halsey drive school playground should be bigger (speech)

Introduction
Uhhhh…. don't you want the playground to be bigger?
Well I do and I’m going to tell you why.

First main idea and evidence
There are lots of children at Halsey Drive School.
In the seniors we have 256 and in the juniors we have 248.
In the whole school there are 504 students.
That’s a lot of people to fit on two small playgrounds!

Second main idea and evidence
It will be safer so the children will not bump into each others
and they can jump. There will be way less accidents and
therefore less people getting hurt.  At the moment the
playground is so small that people can swing into each other
while playing on the monkey bars, children push and shove
each other arguing over equipment and whose turn it is and on
the slide, people hit into each other at the bottom.
Overcrowded playgrounds leads to crying, upset and angry
children. The duty teacher has to deal with injuries and hand
out many sick bay cards. However, if we had a bigger
playground there would be more space to swing, jump, balance,
run, and climb. More space means happy, safe children and
less stressed out duty teachers!

Third main idea and evidence
We should add so some more equipment so that children are
able to practise their jumping, running, climbing and balance.
Students can practise these skills if we add a flying fox, a slide,
a climbing wall and two swings. These are important physical
skills for children to learn as it helps them to move well and
build up their body strength.  Playing on the playground also
makes children fit and therefore healthy.

Conclusion
Don't you want a bigger playground to play on ? I sure do! I
strongly believe that the Halsey Drive School playgrounds
should be bigger as it would be safer and allow more children
to practise important movement skills.  So come on principals,
let’s make it happen! Bigger playgrounds for everyone!

My Money Note

I chose Mr Bainbridge to draw on my note because he was an amazing teacher at Halsey Drive School. I also have a kiwi bird because the kiwi bird is a NZ native bird. I put a holographic window on my note so you can tell that the money is real and not fake. I put the tukutuku panel next to the kiwi bird.  I wrote $10,000 so they know how much money note is worth.

Matariki

Matariki is the star shine  bright.
In the old days the people did not have phone to make there way
home. So the Matariki is to make there way home again the star do
not move. The Matariki is the time to celebrate for Maori new year.
It the seven sisters in the sky shine bright that mean it is warm and
people take a day off and have a special day.

The war was in Gallipoli, there were flies everywhere. The war sounds like big gun shooted and strange noise. It smells like smoke everywhere, they have to go in a trench to hide.We sleep under ground so at night we don't get shot.We carry water up the hill and down,in Gallipoli is very hot (it is not comfortable,)we wake up early.

School photographs

Dear photographs,
I am writing to you to express my opinion about the way you take and arrange the class photographs.

Like how you you set the photographs, for the classes photo that I like is the red is the background for the photo, because it look better.

I also like that the childrens is in rows and teacher in the photo so of course I like the back row is standing three, second and the first  row sat down. I like it so the children look better.

Surely the size look lovely not to small or not to big that children off the photographs. I  like the photo schrader not dayniile.

L’ m absolutely certain that you should read my ideas most carefully. You may or may not agree with my opinion, but please do consider them. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Your Sincerely,

Samantha

Tangaroa and the Taniwha

On the dark night, it was gloomy and it was cold. There was a big flash of lightning above the wakas, the moana was cold. The Maori had left Hawaiki in their waka in search of the land.

Suddenly from far below the sea rose a ginormous Taniwha. The Taniwha had scary yellow eyes, a moko on his face and a long pointy tail. The monstrous Taniwha ate three waka.

Hearing the sound of destruction brought Tangaroa to the surface to see what was happening.  Tangaroa was the god of the sea. He had a big moko on his face and he had long hair. He had a muscular body and held on tightly to a patu.

Tangaroa was angry and whacked the Tangaroa “What are you doing in my moana?”. Tangaroa again whacked angrily his razor sharp patu into the taniwha’s enormous flesh. The taniwha screamed out in agony “Stop!” The wretched taniwha squirted whero blood into the ocean. The ocean looked like a dark red sea. The taniwha lay in three pieces.

Over many years the three pieces of the taniwha turned into the islands of Aotearoa, and thanks to Tangaroa it is safe for the Maori to walk on the sand and fish.

The Waka

Waka
“Ka mate, ka mate”, is bellowed tremendously loudly from the rowing warriors. Holding tightly onto the oars they feel cold. The tough, tattooed warriors are hard working. They look like will never give up rowing the waka. The warriors open the their eyes and poke out their tongue.
The waka is like a sharp knife cutting the water. The oars go in the inky black water, the front of the waka there is a koruru. We are ready to fight.

How to Hongi

The Hongi

What is a hongi?

A hongi is the pressing of noses, which symbolises the exchange of the breath of life

When does the hongi happen?

When the tangata whenua side indicates that the speeches are complete, the manuhiri speakers approach the tangata whenua to hongi

What to do.

1.First look at the people and say”kia ora” then put your left hand and put your right hand on the shoulder and squeeze the hand.

2. Next well your  left hand is shaking with the other people bend down.

3.Then touch each other nose for a seconds.
